Role Summary
The Communication and Outreach Officer supports IRO by ensuring clear communication with the community, smooth admissions processes, and a welcoming environment for all participants and partners. This entry-level role is ideal for a motivated individual passionate about youth and women's empowerment, eager to learn and grow within the nonprofit sector. The officer will assist with communication content, participant outreach, admissions coordination, and front-desk responsibilities to help programs run effectively.
Key Responsibilities
1. Communication, Content & Storytelling
- Manage and regularly update IRO’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, and WhatsApp).
- Write and publish blog posts highlighting IRO programs, success stories, events, and impact.
- Draft and support the distribution of newsletters for participants, partners, donors, and the wider community.
- Capture photos and short videos during trainings, site visits, and events.
- Support the creation of simple communication materials such as flyers, posters, announcements, and social media graphics.
- Collect and prepare short stories, testimonials, and impact highlights for internal and external communication.
- Maintain organized documentation of communication outputs and program activities for reporting and visibility.
2. Media Relations & Public Visibility
- Support engagement with local and international media houses to increase IRO’s visibility.
- Assist in drafting press releases, media briefs, and talking points for events and announcements.
- Help coordinate media coverage for trainings, graduations, events, and major milestones.
- Maintain a basic media contact list and support follow-ups with journalists and media partners.
- Support the Program Manager in responding to media inquiries when required.
3. Outreach & Community Engagement
- Share information about IRO programs with youth, women, schools, and community members.
- Support community outreach activities, school visits, information sessions, and recruitment campaigns.
- Assist in mobilizing participants during application and admissions periods.
- Strengthen relationships with schools, community leaders, partners, and local organizations through consistent communication.
- Support external events, exhibitions, and training days by ensuring effective coordination and visibility.
5. Front Desk & Office Support (Occasional)
- Welcome visitors, applicants, and participants in a warm, professional, and respectful manner.
- Answer phone calls, respond to inquiries, and provide basic information about IRO programs.
- Maintain an organized, friendly, and professional reception area.
- Support simple administrative tasks such as printing, photocopying, scanning, and filing.
- Assist with scheduling appointments and day-to-day program logistics as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
- Diploma (A1) or Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Business, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Strong interest in writing, storytelling, and digital communication (blogs, newsletters, social media).
- Basic knowledge of social media platforms, smartphones, Canva, and digital communication tools.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in Kinyarwanda and English.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with diverse audiences.
- Well-organized, reliable, and able to multitask in a dynamic training environment.
- Passion for youth and women’s empowerment, with a strong willingness to learn and grow.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in communication, business, social sciences, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of social media, smartphones, Canva, and other digital communication tools.
- Strong interpersonal skills and good communication in Kinyarwanda and English.
- Organized, reliable, and able to multitask in a busy training environment.
- Passion for youth and women empowerment, and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work well with diverse groups of young people.
Preferred but Not Required
Experience with community outreach, customer service, or office administration.
Basic photography or video editing skills.
Familiarity with nonprofit work or youth programs.
