Igire Rwanda Organization, through its SheCanCODE Bootcamp, recently carried out an inspiring community outreach program aimed at equipping 300 young women from Senior 4 and Senior 5 in secondary schools across Rwanda with practical computer programming, digital literacy, and communication skills. This initiative specifically targeted students in computer science-related combinations, providing them with a unique opportunity to translate their classroom learning into real-world applications.
Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to community empowerment, the SheCanCODE Bootcamp also addressed the students’ practical needs by providing school materials and sanitary tools. This outreach is a testament to the bootcamp’s mission as a youth-led organization dedicated to giving back to the community and nurturing the next generation of digital leaders.
A Nationwide Initiative
The program reached students in schools such as Groupe Scolaire Kacyiru II, Groupe Scolaire Kimironko I, and several others. The one-day training sessions were designed as hands-on workshops to show the students how to apply their computer science knowledge to practical problems and inspire them to pursue careers in technology.
By focusing on Senior 4 and 5 students in computer science combinations, the program addressed a critical gap in practical experience, ensuring these young women could connect theoretical concepts with tangible skills.
Hands-On Training with Scratch
A key component of the training was an introduction to Scratch, a beginner-friendly programming platform that enables users to create interactive stories, animations, and games. Scratch uses a visual, drag-and-drop interface, making it an accessible entry point for students new to coding. This approach allowed the girls to see the immediate results of their programming efforts and boosted their confidence in applying their classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.
“I’ve always loved studying computer science, but this was the first time I actually got to create something with my skills,” said Grace, a Senior 4 student from Groupe Scolaire Kimironko I. “Using Scratch was so exciting—it made me realize I can build anything I put my mind to.”
The training emphasized the importance of problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration, equipping participants with foundational skills to thrive in Rwanda’s growing digital economy.
Fostering Communication and Digital Literacy Skills
In addition to programming, the training sessions included workshops on digital literacy and public speaking. Participants learned how to navigate the internet safely, use email effectively, and create documents and presentations with basic digital tools. Public speaking sessions helped the students build confidence and articulate their ideas clearly—essential skills for future innovators and leaders.
“The public speaking session was my favorite,” shared Ange, a Senior 5 student from Groupe Scolaire Kacyiru II. “I’ve always been shy, but practicing with the mentors made me feel more confident. I even gave a short speech at the end of the day!”
Meeting Practical Needs: School Materials and Sanitary Tools
To ensure the students could focus fully on their education and skill development, Igire Rwanda Organization also provided school supplies, including notebooks, pens, and backpacks. Recognizing the barriers posed by inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products, the organization distributed sanitary tools to support the students’ well-being and prevent absenteeism caused by menstrual challenges.
“The support we received goes beyond just learning,” said Liliane, a participant from a rural school. “Having these materials means we can focus better on our studies without worrying about basic needs.”
Inspiring Testimonies and Life-Changing Impact
The program left a profound impact on the participants, who shared heartfelt testimonies about how the training had transformed their perspectives and aspirations.
“I’ve always enjoyed studying computer science, but I never imagined myself as a programmer,” said Aline, a Senior 4 student from Groupe Scolaire Kacyiru II. “After the training, I now dream of becoming a software developer. It feels achievable now.”
Teachers and school administrators also praised the initiative for its transformative impact. “The girls are returning to class more motivated and eager to apply what they’ve learned,” said a teacher from Groupe Scolaire Kimironko I. “This program has given them the confidence to believe in their potential.”
A Commitment to Community Empowerment
This initiative reflects SheCanCODE Bootcamp’s dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for young women in Rwanda. By targeting students in computer science-related combinations, the program not only reinforces classroom learning but also prepares participants to navigate the practical realities of the digital world.
“This outreach isn’t just about teaching skills,” explained one of the mentors from SheCanCODE Bootcamp. “It’s about inspiring these girls to see themselves as capable of transforming their communities with the knowledge they’re gaining.”
Looking Ahead
The success of this outreach program has motivated Igire Rwanda Organization to expand its efforts. Plans are underway to reach more schools and students, especially in rural areas, and provide them with similar opportunities to connect classroom learning with practical applications. By nurturing young women’s potential and empowering them with digital and communication skills, Igire Rwanda Organization is paving the way for a more inclusive and empowered generation.
As these young women carry forward the skills and confidence they’ve gained, they represent the immense potential of Rwanda’s youth to innovate, lead, and contribute to the country’s development. Through initiatives like this, the dream of a thriving, inclusive digital economy is becoming a reality—one empowered girl at a time.
